Privacy policy

Owlproof is operated by Mako Logics LLC (“Owlproof,” “we,” “us”). This policy explains what the Owlproof website, browser extension, and Windows app collect, who we send it to, and what we do with it. Owlproof is a United States product intended for users in the United States, and this policy is written under United States law.

The text you check

When you use the desktop app or the browser extension, the text in the field you are actively editing is sent to our server at owlproof.app so it can be checked. To produce the corrections, our server passes that text to the third-party AI provider we use to run the checks (currently Anthropic’s Claude). Those providers process the text solely to return a result to us, which we then return to you. This is the only reason your text leaves your device, and it happens only while Owlproof is turned on and checking.

We do not store the text you check. It is processed to generate your corrections and then discarded. We do not sell it, rent it, share it for anyone else’s purposes, use it to show you advertising, or use it to train our own models. The only things we keep from a check are a one-way hash of your IP address and per-day counts, used to enforce limits and control costs, never the words themselves.

You stay in control. Turn checking off globally or per-site in the extension, or pause it in the desktop app, and nothing is sent.

Your account

Owlproof requires a free account to run. When you create one we store your email address, a securely hashed password (never the password itself), the date you signed up, and a one-way hash of your IP address (never the IP itself). If you turn on two-factor authentication we store the secret needed to verify your codes. We keep per-account counts of how many checks and rewrites you run each day, to enforce fair-use limits and understand what the service costs to run. We do not keep the text you check or rewrite.

If you sign in with Google, Google tells us your email address, your name, and a stable identifier for your Google account, and we store those so we can recognize you next time. We do not receive your Google password and we do not get access to anything else in your Google account. An account made this way has no Owlproof password unless you choose to set one.

The help chat

The Help button on this site opens an assistant that answers from a fixed set of facts about Owlproof. What you type there is sent to our server and passed to Anthropic’s Claude to produce the answer; it is not stored unless you ask for a person. If you do, the conversation, the email address you give, and the page you were on are saved as a support ticket, emailed to us so we can answer, and kept until the ticket is resolved and cleaned up. That form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to block bots.

Payments

If you subscribe to Owlproof Pro, payment is handled entirely by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number. Stripe holds your payment details and processes the charge; we store a Stripe customer identifier and your subscription status (active or canceled) so we know whether your account is on Pro. Stripe’s handling of your payment information is covered by Stripe’s own privacy policy.

Website analytics and cookies

We keep basic visit counts (which pages loaded, the referring site, and the browser family such as Chrome or Edge, with hashed IPs) and use Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights for aggregate performance data. Our forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to block bots. We set one cookie, the one that keeps you signed in. No advertising trackers, no cross-site tracking, no data brokers.

Who we share it with

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information, and we have no “carefully selected partners.” We do rely on a short list of service providers to run Owlproof, and we share only what each one needs to do its job:

These providers act on our behalf and are not permitted to use your information for their own purposes. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Owlproof, our users, or the public.

Your choices and California rights

You can turn off checking at any time, and you can delete your account (below). We do not sell or “share” personal information as those terms are used under California law (the CCPA/CPRA), so there is nothing to opt out of on that front. California residents may still ask us what we hold about them and ask us to delete it; email us and we will not discriminate against you for asking.

Deleting your account

Email support@owlproof.app from the address on your account and we delete the account, its device keys, its usage records, and the email tied to it. If you have a Pro subscription, cancel it first in your account, or ask us and we will cancel it as part of the deletion.

How long we keep things

Account information is kept while your account is open and deleted when you delete the account. Usage counts and hashed IPs are short-lived operational records kept only as long as needed for fair-use limits, cost tracking, and abuse prevention. The text you check is never retained.

Security

Passwords are hashed, connections are encrypted in transit, and secrets such as device keys are stored encrypted. No system is perfectly secure, but we hold very little about you by design, which is the best protection of all.

Children

Owlproof is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will remove it.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date above and, for material changes, tell you plainly. We will not quietly expand what we collect under an old date.
